5 out of 5 stars A great Bible study aid   December 26, 2007

Shortly after I became a Christian over 20 years ago, I purchased the one volume edition of Jay P. Green's "Hebrew-Greek-English Interlinear Bible." It contains the original languages for both the Old Testament and the New Testament, Green's word-for-word English translation below each Hebrew and Greek word, and Strong's concordance numbers above each word. In the margin is "The Literal Translation of the Bible" (LITV for "Literal Version"). I then purchased additional study aids coded to Strong's numbers. With these aids, and Green's interlinear, I had some access to the original languages before even learning Hebrew or Greek.

And let me tell, you I found this study very fruitful spiritually. Of course, using such aids is not the same as actually knowing Hebrew and Greek, but it is still worth the money for the books and the effort.

This study also convinced me that versions like the NIV are not reliable. The NIV simply does not match up with Green's word-for-word translation. I discuss my experiences in this regard in detail in my book Differences Between Bible Versions.

I used the one volume version of this interlinear for some time. But the small print and large book size made it difficult to use. So later I purchased the four volume set, which has much larger print and are smaller in size. And I continue to use this four volume set to this day.

In fact, this was one of the references I consulted when working on my Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament: Third Edition (ALT). However, I based my ALT on the Majority Text, specifically, Robinson and Pierpont's The New Testament in the Original Greek. Given that Green's interlinear uses the Textus Receptus, it was not as helpful as the "NKJV Interlinear" (now titled the Majority Text Greek New Testament Interlinear) which uses The Greek New Testament According to the Majority Text with Apparatus: Second Edition. But still, Green's interlinear is a great Bible study aid.

5 out of 5 stars This bible is awesome   December 3, 2007

I seriously didn't expect to get hooked on this bible the way that I have. It has enhanced my study so richly that I no longer study without it. The Strong's references make it really wasy to look words up as you study. The type is very small, and the english translation is awesome. It is not the KJV, it is a literal translaiton which makes scriptures come to life even more. Hebrew OT and Greek NT scriptures are written in columns paralell to the English text. Great study tool, great for ministers or those that just want a deeper understanding of the Bible. I will preface all of my comments with this statement however: If you are a Christian seeking a deeper relationship with Christ through the scriptures, there is no study of the Bible without the intervention of the Holy Spirit. If you are not seeking the guidance of the Holy Ghost, there is no point in studying. You study the bible to apply it to your life, not to debate it or to develop some philosophical view of why the earth is round. This Interlinear Bible has been a blessing to me and it will be a blessing to you as well.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but translation is not always scholarly enough for me.   November 13, 2007

I'm generally very happy with this interlinear Bible. I can only speak for the Hebrew section, but I must say there were points here and there where I was less than impressed with the the 'word for word' translation elements. They appeared to ignore common scholarly convention (and very rarely were flat out wrong) and the uneducated would probably not pick up on this. Nevertheless, I found it useful as a quick reference backup to my own Hebrew-English translations using quality lexicon sources such as BDB or Holladay. However, I would not rely on the interlinear 'word-for-word' translation as final close translation, its just too inaccurate. Overall though, if you know what you are doing, or on the other extreme, don't really care, then it's good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars King James? Awesome!   November 4, 2007
For those of you who want to have a greater relationship with God and have a better understanding in your heart and brain, this is a great translation! If you are a King James only fan, this interpretation may surprise you in a Godly Way. It will awaken you to more King James knowledge. If King James translation is not your life, you will also love this translation! This translation and the Amplified are the only ones that I have found that have Jesus stating "I Am" in both Matthew's and Mark's synoptic Gospels. He is more that we could ever ask for or imagine!

4 out of 5 stars Great bible study tool!   September 30, 2007

This is a great tool for studying the bible. My only complaint is that the Hebrew text is hard to read because it is small and a bit blurry. This book is the first full interlinear bible that I have seen. It has a pronunciation guide and other grammatical helps in the beginning. It is very good for looking up passages and getting the word for word in the original language. I'm sure it will help me in my study of God's holy and inspired word.
