The reality of a functional prayer life. January 4, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Richard Foster has given me a sense of literacy in the realm of something I've fumbled through most of my Christian life-Prayer.
His manner of dealing with the specifics of prayer, the different kinds of prayer and the purpose of prayer in each chapter have given me something to grasp in the illusory world of communing with God. The idea of communication with an invisible God which Paul charecterises as dim and dark is less foreboding in the light of Richard Foster's interpretation of scripture.
His depiction of personal experiences, which aren't given to fluff or hyperbole, have solidified my resolve to pursue a life of prayer.
Excellent overview of prayer November 28, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Richard Foster explains different types of prayer each having its own chapter. The less controversial aspects of prayer tend to be in the front of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a richer prayer life, is willing to learn and doesn't have to agree with everything an author says in order to appreciate the book.
A Classic in Christian Spirituality April 6, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
If I were to own one book on prayer, this would be the one. Foster has spent a lifetime teaching prayer and the spiritual disciplines. This book is the distillation of a profound life. His teaching is clear, his thinking incisive. I have used and recommended this volume (and Foster's Celebration of Discipline) for years. After a decade on the shelf, I worked my way through it again this year. I was awed by new insights. It reminded me of Mark Twain's comment about his father, "When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learnt in seven years."
Blessed October 11, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have been blessed by this book. The author is very down to earth and honest admitting the most basic troubles he has had in his prayer life and giving suggestions for how to make your personal prayer life grow into a loving relationship with our creator.
Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home September 21, 2005 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book was very inspirational and informative. It is a good text for anyone interested in the Christian disciplines, especially prayer. It provided information in the "how to" as well as the inspiration of the "why for".
