Celebration of Discipline January 3, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
One of the most significant books I've ever read. In my top 5. I often gift this book to friends and family, realizing that only a few are ready or called to Foster's level of spirituality but knowing that there is a nugget of truth for everyone in this book. This book should be reread every several years and don't try to swallow every thing at once. Take baby steps .
One of the best books at equipping you to best pursue God December 9, 2006 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
Anyone who is longing to escape a mediocre or surface-level relationship with God must read Foster's "Celebration of Discipline."
Despite the somewhat scary title, this book absolutely covers the essential nature of discipline in regards to achieving the goal of growing closer to Christ (arguably any goal must be reached with discipline).
Not only is this book, in and of itself, amazing at revealing the depths of encouragement and edification that spiritual disciplines provide us but, this book has influenced many writers that will shape the generations to come.
Most notably, I believe John Ortberg's "The Life You've Always Wanted" and J.G. Marking's "A Voice Is Calling" would not be the modern classics they are, and will be for years to come, without Foster's influence and inspiring wisdom. You can hear echoes of Foster in Ortberg and certainly in Marking's statement that "only when desire meets DISCIPLINE will discipleship transform us."
On the list of must have books to help anyone grow spiritually, this and the two above should line every Christian's bookshelf.
a classic November 11, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a foundational book for the modern study of spiritual disciplines. It is broad, well grounded, and draws from the body of accumulated wisdom through the ages, while staying fresh and relevant to today. It deserves a place in your library as a resource for decades.
A must have! November 7, 2006 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
My men's group and I just finished going through this book and Wow!
Many of our group members have been believers for over 15 years while others are new to starting their journey with Christ. Across the spectrum every single one of us in our 8-10 person group would show up going, "I learned something new," or "What an interesting perspective. I have to review that again."
Every one of us felt like we grew from the material in this book. For someone looking to have a change of heart, this is the How-To to all the books on the Why. Very practical steps to take and practice as well as plenty of scripture referenced and relied upon.
This is a call to use the tools in the book (meditation, prayer, service, etc.) to prepare the heart so it can be transformed by God. He makes it very clear that doing any one or two of the disciplines in and of itself does not bring change. God changes us. The disciplines allow us to prepare ourselves like a farmer works the ground, preparing it for a harvest that will come in its time.
Each chapter was a bit overwhelming to even spend an entire week on,as the implications of each topic extend into challenging the reader toward a life change. His organization of the Inner Disciplines and Outer Disciplines. Again to think of things like Solitude being an Outer Discipline shed new light on the topic, but one he defends very well.
I was grateful for the Journal Handbook that goes with this as it allowed me to further explore each concept over a year. In our men's group I found the supplemental study guide helpful in communicating the central concept of what may have been a difficult chapter to understand due to the language and writing style at times. Also, the study guide helped add additional scripture for us to look up during our meetings.
There is a reason this book shows up on ever Top 50 Christian Books list out there and it has been in print for over 25 years. Regardless of where you are at with your walk with God you'll get some meat in this book and leave with plenty to chew on and hopefully apply to your life.
