This book will simply change your life! August 24, 1998 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have read many books on spiritual growth over the years but none of them can compare to this incredible masterpiece. Truly, we need deep people of God and this book can help any Christian come to understand the Classical Disciplines in a real & relevant way. ONLY read this book if you are ready to move deeper in your relationship to the Lord!
Practical Guidance on 12 "Classic" Christian Disciplines May 12, 1998 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Although a lifelong Christian and daughter of a Methodist minister, I had never explored certain of the "classic" Christian disciplines that Foster covers. This book provides a wonderful introduction to these topics, as well as new ideas for the disciplines with which I was already familiar. In particular, the friends with whom I read the book and I enjoyed the sequence in which Foster covered the various topics, and the interconnectedness of each of these chapters. Read the book and work through it with the accompanying journal/workbook. Use it as the basis for small group discussions or an organized retreat. Regardless of your background this book will help you learn and grow in your Christian beliefs, and will help you put those beliefs in action in new ways.
A great guide for parents February 24, 1998 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
After reading this book, it was easy for me to see how and understand why my parents disciplined me the way they did. I highly recommend this book for all parents.
Celebration of Discipline October 21, 1997 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
As Chrisitans we talk about how we are "learning about God" and "talking with God," but sadly, we stay stagnant in our relationship. Richard Foster explains what disciplines are necessary to grow in a closer communion with Him. His language is not loftly, but thankfully simple; it is exactly what we need to learn how to commune with God.
concrete ways for putting spiritual disciples to work May 14, 1996 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
While aimed at evangelicals, Foster's book will be useful to a wider audience. He draws on his own Quaker background as well as his wide reading to presenta selection of spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and journaling as contemporary possibilities. Concrete and helpful, though sometimes a bit wide-eyed.
