4 out of 5 stars This book had an impact   April 29, 2008
I had been unhappy with my church for over a year when I read this book. As I read, I kept thinking "I want what this guy has". When I got to the part where he said he felt like belonged at his church, I knew I was church shopping. And yes I found a church where I belonged.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Enjoyable   April 2, 2008

Pros: This book was like a breath of fresh air. It was so refreshing and entertaining. Very powerful and deep at times but always enjoyable. I could hardly wait for my reading time each day. In many ways I wish I could think more like him. Its just a great read, and not necessarily just for passing around as an outreach tool for Christians.

Cons: I did not realize there were Christians out there on that waveband. Don is heavily influenced by his Portland Starbucks crowd. He is not from Texas anymore. Sometimes he offends my conservative roots. In his books he mentions several times the shortcomings of the conservative evangelical crowd, and the Republicans. If he is going to talk about this stuff, he needs to mention the untold amount of damage some liberal thinking has done to this country. Give liberal carnage equal time.

5 out of 5 stars MMMMM yeah baby   April 1, 2008
We should all do the confessional thing Miller and his crew did at Reed. Gotta read the book to find out!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful wonderful set of ramblings   March 27, 2008

as I am an 18 year old christian in college, I felt so good when I found a book like this. The ideas within I felt I could relate to. When the bible says if your eye sins cast your eye into hell, and yet says love thy neighbor, I've always wondered how to apply this in the modern world. Miller's anecdotes on his experiences at reed college set a great example for me.

It just so happened that before I read this book I had been battling doubt, and issues with love......it was no coincidence that I found this book

I would recommend this to anyone

4 out of 5 stars What a great title metaphor   March 25, 2008
I bought this book on the strength of the title metaphor as expressed in the "book description" quote: 'I used to not like God because God [like jazz] doesn't resolve...' I still haven't reached that part of the book, but I discovered a lot of wonderful bits along the way, especially the chapter in which Miller suggests it is the devil's influence that leads us to think Bible stories are for children. I agree with Miller that critical faculties are crucial to gaining almost anything from Scripture. Jesus spoke in parables so that his followers would be forced to think, perhaps -- but often they misunderstood rather than undertake that thinking.

Miller's very personal story and conversational style make _Blue Like Jazz_ a good introduction to Christian theodicy in the modern age, I think. A lot of people who want to question but don't even know how will benefit.

My Kindle edition has a more interesting typeface than most Kindle books, and is easy to read and navigate.
