Inspiring book March 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dark Night of the Soul is a deep book, discussing a familiar struggle of seekers of Jesus Christ our Lord and savior. King David spoke of these lonely times for ones soul, when he felt seperated from Gods love.
Excellent! March 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've only begun reading this, since it was purchased along with The Wisdom of the Wilderness, but thus far it is excellent, and definitely both awe & thought inspiring.
Christian Spiritual Enlightenment! January 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Wow, I didn't know there was any inner transformation in Christianity with my Lutheran upbrining. The stanzas themself, are excellent to meditate on.
Deep study for self-examination and meditation June 8, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Do not let the size of this little classic make you think it will be a quick read and easy study. It is difficult reading with regard to the somewhat archaic language but more so for the probing nature the author demonstrates in self-examination. It is not a quick study but one that helps you work out your salvation with fear and trembling. The wounds it can inflict may be painful but necessary for true healing of the human heart. Read and meditate on the words a little at a time - the sections are short enough to facilitate that approach. This is no self-help chicken soup for the dark night, it is major surgery for the wounded and sin-stained heart under intense self-examination.
A Roman Catholic Classic on the Darker Times January 31, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The darkest hour is just before dawn. St. John of the Cross wrote this classic discourse on those moments when one feels like they have been abandoned by all that is hopeful. This is one of the hallmark writings of Catholic mysticism on a common and often harsh aspect of human experience. It is deep religious and spiritual wisdom but well worth an examination as one delves into the pain of a dark night. The cure for the pain lies in the pain rather than in it avoidance. St. John of the Cross is a hallmark of how to walk with God when the light seems to have gone out.
