Reap What You Sow September 16, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
As much as I am learning about discipleship, I am learning even more about my own personal walk with Christ through the eyes of this book. I am challenged at every turn of the page to consider my strengths, weaknesses, and daily decisions as they impact my effectiveness in ministry. Discipleship is a love relationship expressed in service. Props to the authors!
extremely applicable and easy to read July 19, 2006 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
This is the most straight forward, clearly written books on this subject. In the past, my attempts to mimic biblical discipleship have been hindered by a lack of practical advice. I was able to read through this book and gather several key points that I could use immediately with the guys I currently work with. The stories that Dennis and Jesse gave throughout the book also gave me the ability to see the clear ways that issues I'm not currently dealing with could be dealt with.
An excellent read July 14, 2006 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This book is an excellent read. It is both Biblically sound and extemely practical. I would recomend it for anyone who is interested in learning how to do Christian ministry. Dealing with people is a challenge, and this book gives great insight into how to better understand people, and how to more effectively love them.
Organic Disciplemaking: Mentoring Others Into Spiritual Maturity and Leadership July 13, 2006 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book is so helpful in getting organized to help people who want to know God in many ways. It provides a wonderful guide to teach people how to learn about and defend Jesus and the authenticity of the Bible, and how to equip them for service. It is not a cookbook, however. It challenges me to pray and think about people in new ways.
Practical, Non-Churchy Coverage of a Core Need In the Church July 13, 2006 8 out of 14 found this review helpful
In the midst of reading five other "very important, prioritized" books, a friend insisted that I drop everything and read "Organic Disciplemaking" by McCallum and Lowery. I took it on my family camping vacation with little expectation I would even crack the cover. But once I did, I finished it in just five early morning readings.
O.D. is an excellent and practical resource for those outside of Xenos Christian Fellowship who do not have the good fortune of being steeped in teachings and real-life examples of Biblical, organic discipleship.
After reading the recommendations by respected authors and grass-roots "movers and shakers" like Dr. John Perkins (President, John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development), Bruxy Cavey (author "The End of Religion" and Teaching Pastor of The Meeting House in Toronto, Canada), and Dr. Joel Comiskey (author and President, Cell Church Solutions) I knew this book was in good company.
I breezed through the friendly, non-churchy vernacular and especially emjoyed both authors' examples from their experiences. The material in this book fanned into flame a smaller fire Dennis had inspired in me from a talk he had previously delivered on "Real vs. Pseudo Discipleship".
How satisfying for these authors to know that their collaborative work will quickly have an impact on domestic (U.S) readers and before long many parts of the world!
One critique: Some of the appendices merely pointed to the Xenos Web site [...]) for more info. I wish the core, static content of those materials would have been included in each appendix with footnotes or references to the Web site for additional, dynamic information.
Absolutely worth the time to read! Every Christian who wants to optimize their life to make the greatest impact towards one of the highest and most privileged callings should read "Organic Disciplemaking" -- sooner rather than later.
