Long time Dragonlance fan September 10, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was an interesting book. Margaret Weis created some interesting characters, and shaped Mina into something totally different. The only thing weird about it was that is was all about sex and love and stuff, and while that usually gives the Dragonlance books a kick, Weis went overboard without Hickman to restrain her. I'm looking forward to seeing what Amber and Iron and Amber and Blood are like - maybe they'll be good also, probably better.
Another enjoyable Dragonlance book, even with no Hickman! September 7, 2005 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'm yet another Dragonlance fan, having read just about everything that W & H have put out over the past I don't know how many years. I must say that I am not a big fan of Weis with no Hickman to lighten her up a bit as in "the name is Bond, James Bond" and similar types of silliness that I am pretty sure was all Hickman's fault!
Given that I was a bit hesitant, I did decide to give Margaret another try and I think she did make a decent effort. Admittedly there was a notable lack of silly humor which is probably why I didn't give this book 5 stars. Still, all in all, it is good entertainment, what I would call a light/fun read. I don't think this book deserves any awards nor did it change my life or challenge me to deeper thoughts. If you are looking for something like that you shouldn't be reading Dragonlance novels IMHO!
I will also say that this is far from being the best of the Dragonlance novels; but I wouldn't say it is the worst either. Right about in the middle of the pack if you ask me. Anybody who loves Dragonlance should enjoy this book, if you are not already a fan then you might want to start with the earlier works and save this one for later!
Another Dragonlance gem August 16, 2005 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Margret Weis tackle a character that last appeared in the War of Souls trilogy, that character being Mina. Now, int he first War of Souls book - I wasn't a fan of Mina. Yet, by the third book I was intriqued at what would happen next, so I decided to pick up this book.
I am quite pleased that I grabbed this book. The story of Mina takes some unexpected turns, I won't go into them as they would be spoilers. Sufice to say that Wies does a masterful job of weaving this tale into one that Dragonlance readers will enjoy.
Dragonlance told by the best August 12, 2005 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Once again Margaret Weis continues to weave a wonderful web on the world of Krynn, picking up where she left off in "Dragons of a Vanished Moon" while introducing a whole new set of characters as well. Just as in all her books, she writes an ending to the book that just makes you wish you had the next volume already at hand!
What happened Margaret, you used to be good August 9, 2005 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Any dedicated DRAGONLANCE fan is probably going to buy this book regardless of the reviews written here. I started reading the Weis&Hickman books in March, and I loved every page of every book. Every three days I picked up a new one, having finished the one which came before it.
I finally reach the point where I have nothing left to read by the author except Amber and Ashes. I was a bit hesitant about buying the book, never to fond of Mina as a character concept. My hesitation was well placed so it seemed when I first opened the book. The typeface was horrible. Small and loopy, as if the whole book was written in itallic. The pages are wrought with typos and grammatical errors. The dialog is dull and does little to draw forth character personalities. I generally love the dialog in many of the other books, often finding myself laughing out loud at some of Tasslehoff's or Raistlin's interactions with their companions. In this book, the conversation leaves much to be desired. The conversation between Rhys and Nightshade or Mina and Chemosh does not lend itself well to anything other then predictableand hollow exchanges of dialog.
The characters are single-minded, especially Mina, who finds herself slave to a god yet again, though it is slightly different, in that she is more or less a sex slave, she is the same Mina, lacking always in the substance and personality department.
I cannot honestly say that I enjoyed this book. For all of you Chronicles and Chronicles related books fans, Amber and Ashes reads nothing like those novels. Perhaps the author should have thought twice before killing off all of her old characters or straying from spinoffs more closely related to the original group. It is dark and morbid, the first chapters reading like a soft core erotica novel.
I for one was disappointed.
