Product Description A great international bestseller, the book in which, on the eve of the millennium, Pope John Paul II brings to an accessible level the profoundest theological concerns of our lives. He goes to the heart of his personal beliefs and speaks with passion about the existence of God; about the dignity of man; about pain, suffering, and evil; about eternal life and the meaning of salvation; about hope; about the relationship of Christianity to other faits and that of Catholicism to other branches of the Christian faith. With the humility and generosity of spirit for which he is known, John Paul II speaks directly and forthrightly to all people. His message: Be not afraid!

Clear and Direct Answers to Oft-Asked Questions Related to the Pope and Catholicism November 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Vittorio Messori was to participate in an unprecedented globally televised interview of John Paul II on the occasion of his fifteenth anniversary of his papacy. Unfortunately, the interview did not take place due to the complications of the Pope's schedule. Several months later, Messori got a message from the Pope's press secretary saying that the Pope had kept Messori's questions on his desk and felt they should not go to waste. The Pope then responded in writing and suggested the title, "Crossing the Threshold of Hope."
Messori, who edited this work, commented that "the pages that follow make it clear that this is a Pope, who is impatient in his apostolic zeal; a shepherd to whom the usual paths always seem insufficient; who looks to every means to spread the Good News to men; who - evangelically - wants to shout from the rooftops that there is hope, that it has been confirmed, that it is offered to whoever wants to accept it."
In "Crossing," the Pope responds to questions ranging from "the unbelievable claim (to non-Catholics) that the Pope is God's representative," "how the Pope prays," "Why there is so much evil in the world," to "Why does God tolerate suffering?" and "Is there really hope for the young." My favorite questions centered on "Why so many religions?" and "Human Rights," and "Be not afraid."
In answering the first question of most interest to me, John Paul II offered that we should focus not on what is different between religions but what is similar to find a common ground. On the second question, the Pope maintains that the Gospel is the fullest confirmation of human rights which confirms the divine rule and upholds the moral order. And with regard to the last question, the Pope exhorts us to "have no fear of that which you yourselves have created, have not fear of all that man has produced...have no fear of yourselves...Why? Because man has been redeemed by God."
John Paul II in "Crossing the Threshold of Hope" eliminates abstractions and provide answers to these oft-asked questions with clarity and directness, easily understood by all. The editing by Messori is superb, creating a book that is timeless and has become a bedside companion for millions.
"For in hope we are saved." (Rom 8:19-24)
Classic October 31, 2008 The chapters in this book are very short answers to questions posed to the Holy Father. He answers questions such as "does God exist", "what about Islam, Buddha", "what is ecumenism", "what is the new evangalization" etc. He is quite philosophical at times, and he answers some questions which seem to have a more apologetic overtone in more philosophical terms. But many of his insights are very interesting and worth meditating on. I especially enjoyed reading about his involvement in Vatican II. He talks about his close friendship with Fr. de Lubac in this context.
This is an easy read with short chapters that one can easily digest. But at the same time, he gives profound answers to many on the questions. An excellent read and a classic.
Powerful! July 20, 2007 A monumental work for humanity and Salvation. Pope John Paul II answers the questions of an Italian journalist with alacrity and succinctness. He carefully expresses his opinions that lifts the shadows off the Truth, revealing it with philosophical expertise.
The Holy Spirit was surely using Pope John Paul II to spread the message of Jesus Christ and answer many of the questions that Christians and secularists may have concerning God, life and religion.
A major work of Faith defining the Catholic Church and Christianity as a whole. The Pope shows his superior intellect at work. Great book!
God Bless JPII January 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to say that I had much inspiration from this book. Not because I like JPII (RIP), but because of the way he approached religion and society. Every person has his own way of looking at the world, and it is illuminating to read what the leader of the Catholic Church has to say.
Shows the convictions of the former pope during his life time January 9, 2007 2 out of 27 found this review helpful
Many people believe that the former pope stood for the Word of God. If you read the book and honestly compare it's content with what the Bible says, you will find, that this was not true. Otherwise the book is a waist of time and it will be better spend if you read the Bible itself.
