Product Description A novel of manners, The Chosen People is the story of Philip Graetz, a young, idealistic rabbi called to minister to a wealthy congregation in Baltimore in the early 1900s. His goal, to incorporate Jewish ethics into everyday life, is put to the test when he confronts the gulf between old German immigrant and the new Russian immigrant, each a world apart.

A different look at Jewish life. December 5, 1998 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's a real shame that this book has gone out of print, because it is one of the undiscovered gems of Jewish American literature. Focusing on a strike which takes place among E. European Jewish workers at a factory owned by a German-descendant Jew, the novel follows the actions of the hapless naif Reform rabbi Philip Graetz, whose ties to both communities compel him to try to mediate between them. His failure and frustration are a complicated and compelling view of a side of Jewish life at the beginning of this century which gets little attention. I hope someone will return this fine novel to print.
