Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Dating back to 324 AD, when a community of monks requested a chapel to be built on the spot where they believed the Burning Bush had stood, the monastery of St. Catherine has remained an oasis of peace for centuries. Today, it is a place of international pilgrimage, housing the most extensive collection of Greek Orthodox icons in the world. Granted unprecedented access to this holy site, photographer Araldo De Luca and author Corinna Rossi take readers inside the walls of this sacred place, revealing its peerless artistic, historical, and religious legacy through superb photographs and an authoritative text that incorporates the most recent research and discoveries. Presented in a handsome slipcase and featuring a preface by Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, the archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church, this is a book to be cherished by art lovers and anyone interested in our historical and religious heritage.

5 out of 5 stars Special art, special book   February 29, 2008
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

Excellent quality printing that enhances the contents; contents that surprises even the expert on the subject for its in-depth analysis and the fact that so much beauty can be in a single location. If you like art in general, get it. If you like byzantine art, get it, get it. If you have a particular taste for religious art, specially byzantine icons, you'll be sorry you missed it.

5 out of 5 stars Important Reference of Religious Icons   February 22, 2008

This is a catalog of the major icons at St. Catherine's Monastery providing wonderful color photographs and information on each, along with information about the location and importance of the monastery. This volume provides a context for understanding both the artistic merit and religious signficance of icons from the Byzantine period and Crusader period. Other treasures also are showcased. Wonderfully produced, well written, the book is an important reference as well as a captivating volume on art. When opened, it is hard to put down, as the icons invite contemplation. I love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Photos, Italian Text   September 24, 2007
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

Great photos of a magnificent place, but the text is in Italian, and there is no English translation. It is such a lovely book that many English speakers will find it worth the price even without the text, as I did, but it is probably not the best choice for an introduction to St. Katherine's. (The missing star in my rating reflects only my disappointment in the lack of English text.)
