Product Description
A prequel set in the ?dark and sensual world?( 11th Hour) of the national bestselling Black Jewels Trilogy.

Jared is a Red-Jeweled Warlord bound as a pleasure slave by the Ring of Obedience. After suffering nine years of torment as a slave, he murdered his owner and escaped?only to be caught and sold into slavery once again. The notorious queen who has purchased him, known as the Gray Lady, may not be what she seems. Soon, Jared faces a difficult choice: his freedom, or his honor.

Amazon.com Review
In this engaging story of Jared, a Red-Jeweled Warlord and unwilling pleasure slave, Bishop returns to the world of her Black Jewels trilogy (Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, and Queen of the Darkness). Jared, who has murdered his owner and attempted escape, is recaptured and sold to the mysterious Gray Lady. It soon becomes clear that Jared's new queen is not what she seems to be, and he joins with his fellow slaves--all of whom hide their own secrets--to protect the Gray Lady. During her desperate flight from Dorothea SaDiablo, the Black Widow intent on destroying her and claiming her territory, Jared comes to terms with his own demons and discovers what it means to be truly bonded to a queen.

Bishop uses her usual skill to move interesting, rounded characters through a well-drawn world. Although this is a standalone book, there are ties with the events of the trilogy, most especially the appearance of the compelling Daemon Sadi. The author still pulls no punches in describing the sexual violence and misery that are as much a part of this intricate world as the gender role-reversals and the often-agonizing demands of honor and magic. A pleasurable read for fans of emotionally charged fantasy who enjoy both complex characters and societies, and who are not averse to following characters through their struggles and achievements. --Luc Duplessis

5 out of 5 stars Great Book   July 2, 2008
This is the fifth book by Anne Bishop I have purchased and I love them all. This book is a great story, ties in with her other Black Jewels books; but can stand on its own if you have not read any of the other books. You'll root for Jared from fist page to the last.

5 out of 5 stars Anne Bishop does it again   February 23, 2008
I have absolutely loved the Dark Jewel Trilogy and this one is no exception. I had been not reading it because it did not have the main characters in it, except for some minor scenes with Daemon. That did not detract from the book at all. It is still very well written and vibrant and emotional.

3 out of 5 stars An OK read if you've read the Black Jewels Trilogy   February 10, 2008

I read the entire Black Jewels Trilogy in a heartbeat. Those books I could NOT put down until I finished them, and quickly devoured Dreams Made Flesh afterwards, having loved every page on it.

I did suffer a little throughout The Invisible Ring though. It started out well, introducing Jared, the main character. But the tension that was woven around his fear after being sold to a darkly-reputed Queen wavered all too fast. You could really tell where it was going after the first dialogues between said Queen and some of the other slaves. I lost track several times of some of the other characters - having a hard time remembering just who was who, and understanding their usefulness to the story - which made it a little harder to keep interest in looking for clues about who was "the pet".

By the middle of the book I was wondering where the story could go from there, because I felt I already knew the end. The characters read like shadows from the trilogy, offering little more in terms of relationships or dialogues. It is always a bad sign when Daemon Sadi, a secondary character in this book, seems to steal all attention from the main characters, making you wish he'd show up more often.

I don't think it does justice to the other books by this author, but it is still a nice read. Taking place before the BJT, it makes more sense if the other books are read first. So, if you are looking for good books by Anne Bishop, my advice is to devour the Black Jewels Trilogy, and then if you feel you need a little more, read The Invisible Ring for desert.

5 out of 5 stars Anything by Anne Bishop is SUPERB!!!   January 19, 2008
Anne Bishop strikes again in the land of the Black Jewels, and the plot only gets better!!!Jared is the world's perfect, overprotective male falling for... an old lady? Kidding! It scared me when I first read that part, too. But the book is NOT about an old lady, just a really young, naivete one! ^.^She rocks, he rocks, the twisting, mysterious plot of who dun it makes for a EXCELLENTE read!!! I've read it thrice already and plan on doing so again!!!

4 out of 5 stars A good addition.   January 18, 2008
Not my favorite out of the Black Jewel Trilogy world, but it is a good addition. If you like the Trilogy, then you will probably like this.
